How should a Christian teenager think about parties, drugs, and drinking? Here are some Biblical tensions to keep in mind:
1. Responsibility vs. Freedom
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. -1 Corinthians 10:23
You’re fundamentally free to go where you want and ingest what you want. You’re also responsible to decide what’s beneficial and what’s worthless and destructive. You’re big boys and girls now.
2. Wisdom vs. Foolishness
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler,
And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise. -Proverbs 20:1
And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise. -Proverbs 20:1
A good question to ask about a potential party, substance or beverage: Will this turn me into a fool and beat the crap out of me?
3. In world vs. Of world
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. -Jesus in John 17:15-16
I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. -Jesus in John 17:15-16
In the course of life you may find yourself at a party. You may also find yourself in the presence of drugs and drunks. You may find yourself in it; but remember you are not of it. As a Christian, you’re simply not of these things, even if you find yourself around people who are of these things.
4. Legal vs. Illegal
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. -Romans 13:1
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. -Romans 13:1
The Top10 series is for high schoolers; so all this is illegal anyway… And remember, parents are an authority God gave you too. So if you have to lie to them to go there or ingest that, don’t do it.
6 Questions to Ask Before Going to the Party:
1. Is this beneficial or worthless (or dangerous)?
2. Will this turn me into an idiot?
3. Will this beat me up (make me feel terrible/sick)?
4. Can I be there without being overcome by temptation?
5. Will there be illegal stuff going on?
6. Can I be honest with my parents about where I’m going?
Conclusion
But don’t rely on rules as you navigate your teen years. Fling yourself on the mercy of God. Be forgiven by trusting Jesus. Receive new life. Receive a new heart that desires what is good. Don’t try to act like a Christian. Be a Christ follower. Grow in your love for God and people. Devote yourself to making disciples. All this stuff sorts itself out over time.
