Hebrews 6:19

One Simple Truth
The goal of this sermon is to convey one simple truth: Only hope in Jesus holds. Let’s walk through the verse to digest this truth.

The writer is referring to the hope he’s been talking about leading up to this verse: the promise and oath God has made that those trusting and following Jesus have peace with him.

Anchor’s tether the movable to the immovable. A ship to a seabed. A mirror to a wall. Anchors keep things from drifting and falling away. Hope in Jesus is a spiritual anchor.

What is the soul? It is the deepest, most enduring part of you. If you lose a finger, you don’t lose yourself because your souls remains. If you become paralyzed from the neck down, you don’t lose yourself  because your soul remains. If you lose your mind, you don’t lose yourself because your soul remains. If you die, you don’t lose yourself because your soul remains.

Hope in Jesus doesn’t anchor our abilities, bodies, minds, or even lives. All these things will eventually blow away. Hope in Jesus anchors our souls.

So we have to stop securing secondary things before seeing to our souls. Don’t secure your body through exercise until you’ve secured your soul in Jesus. Don’t secure your appearance through cosmetics and clothes until you’ve secured your soul in Jesus. Don’t secure your career, retirement, mind, lifestyle etc. until you’ve secured your soul in Jesus. Securing all these things while ignoring our souls would be like securing our homes for a hurricane and then standing outside with our family to see what happens when it hits.

You can push and pull, but this anchor will not give. That’s because it is hooked deeply into the most immovable object in existence: God himself.
