Do you feel lifeless, like a corpse toppling down the steep hill of your to-do list? Sometimes I feel this way. Often I think a vacation, change of situation, or a cup of coffee is the answer. Ultimately, the answer is this:
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life – John 6:63.
The Spirit gives life. Jesus' words are life. Therefore, the Spirit gives life packaged in Jesus' words.
Any attempt to live in ignorance of Jesus' words is in vain. And any attempt to grasp Jesus' words independent from the Holy Spirit is in vain. So it all starts with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit gives it all to those who receive it.
Maybe the reason so many of us can't get into reading our Bibles is because we can't understand it. Maybe we can't understand it because we haven't asked the Holy Spirit to give it to us. And maybe that's why so many of us are not truly alive and will miss eternal life all together.
So, if you're feeling corpsey (like I was yesterday actually), here's your to-do list:
1. Get away to a quiet isolated place like your car, a park bench or an empty room in your home.
2. Pray a simple prayer: "Holy Spirit, please give me Jesus' words. Please give me life."
3. Read the Bible. You can start right here at John 6.
4. Continue/repeat constantly.
