In my footnotes in my Bible it is explained that Was it right for God to choose Jacob, the younger, to be over Esau? In Malachi 1: 2-3 the statement " I showed my love for you by loving your ancestor Jacob. Yet Esau was Jacob's brother and I rejected Esau" refers to the nations of Israel and Edom rather than to the individual brothers. God chose Jacob to continue the family line of the faithful because he knew his heart was for God. But he did not exclude Esau from knowing and loving him. Keep in mind the kind of God we worship: he is sovereign; he is not arbitrary; in all things he works for our good. He is trustworthy, he will save all who believe in Him. When we understand these qualities of God we know that his choices are good even if we don't understand all his reasons. God does not love one and not the other.

I will say that this chapter has brought alot of thought and conversation at my house!! They couldn't understand why God would love one sibling in the house and not the other. Why were they trying to be a Christian if they thought God didn't love them.. I had to explain that our God does not work that way. He will give salvation to all who believe and accept him as their personal Savior and has the Holy Spirit living in them and letting him guide them in the way they should go and being deciples. If they reject that, then we don't have any reason to live a Christian life because we will not be with Him in heaven.

One note I forgot to include in the recap: fasting is a Biblical method of humbling oneself. Look at how God defines true fasting in Isaiah 58. It's all about helping those in need.
