Using Gratitude to Fight Pornography

Grateful woman

“But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”

Ephesians 5:3-4

In this chapter of Heath Lambert’s Finally Free, we see “how powerful a spirit of gratitude can be as a weapon in the fight against pornography” (p. 122). Why is it powerful? Because “a greedy heart is at the root of sexual immorality” (p. 125).

As Jesus helps you stop lusting after what you don’t have and start cherishing what you do have, pornography’s grip loosens. This being true, consider the following quotes:

  • “Porn trades joy in the reality God has graced you with for greed in the counterfeit world he has not” (p. 127).
  • “The Lord has given you precious friends to love and family relationships to steward” (p. 127).
  • “Do you have a wife? If so, the Lord has given her to you to love and cherish” (p. 127).
  • “What ministry has the Lord given you?” (p. 128).

Finding a Deeper Joy

He closes the chapter describing how gratitude leads to gladness, which outshines pornography’s tainted pleasure. “The battle to be free from porn is the battle to find a deeper joy” (p. 130). With this in mind, may you “rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
