Three Facts About God That Shape Prayer

1 Samuel 2:1-10

In Hannah’s prayer, we’re reminded that God is glorious, holy and sovereign.

Discussion Starters:

  1. Read 1 Samuel 2:1-10 together.
  2. In verse 1, what does it mean to “exult in the LORD?” (Your translation may say “rejoice.”)
  3. How often / recently has exultation in the Lord been part of your experience as a Christian? Share examples together.
  4. Compare Peninnah’s provocation in 1 Samuel 1:6-7 with Hannah’s derision in 2:1. How are the women similar in how they use their words? How are they different? How does 2:3 factor in?
  5. Why does Hannah pray about God’s holiness in verse 2? What does this have to do with her experience in chapter one?
  6. Read verses 4 through 10 again. Do these verses comfort you or disturb you? Explain.
  7. Verse 9 says, “Not by might shall a man prevail.” What does this mean?
  8. If you had to choose one take-away from this passage, what would it be, and what difference might it make in your life?
  9. Take some time to pray together.
